SCIENCE
Sunnyside prides itself on its Science focus and the program enhancements we’ve been able to integrate into the curriculum.
- Our K-5 science curriculum is based the FOSS Program and includes 6-8 week activity-based learning modules focused on Life, Physical Science, and Earth.
- Students take science-focused field trips such as a neighborhood tree walk, visits to the Randall Museum, the Exploratorium, the California Academy of Science and Glen Canyon.
- Kindergarten classes visit the Farallones Marine Sanctuary at Crissy Field every year, and has an in-class presentation from FMS.
- Many classes participate in Mission Science Workshops, which are hands-on, standards-based science activities four times per year.
- San Francisco State University Science Students work with our students by doing hands-on experiments in the classroom.
- UCSF Science Education Partnership – This 6 week partnership brings scientists to teach hands-on lessons in our classrooms, introducing high-level subject matter and materials. Graduate students assist teachers in curriculum design and instruction.
- Science Fair: Each spring, upper grade students design and present experiments at our school science fair.
- Math and Science Night: This fun event takes place every winter. During this evening event, teachers set up a variety of math and science activities for students to take part in.
