LUNCH & RECESS
LUNCH
SFUSD School Breakfast and Lunch - The costs are $1.50 for breakfast and $3 for lunch. After-school snacks are free for students enrolled in the ExCEL after-school program. At the beginning of the school year, you will receive an application form for free and reduced price meals, and the form is also available at the school office. Eligibility is based on household income. The form must be completed each year.
Four ways to pay for school lunch:
Cash – students bring $3 to school, which is collected by teachers during attendance roll call each morning.
Online – Set up your student’s account at www.MealpayPlus.com and pay for meals in advance.
Phone – Contact Mealpay Plus at 866.438.7842.
Check – Download and complete the school meals prepayment form, put the cash or check in an envelope, and have your child return it to the cafeteria staff. The check must be made payable to “Student Nutrition Services.” Be sure to write your child’s name and room number on the check.
Pack a healthy lunch – Sunnyside faculty promotes health and wellness. The following items will be confiscated from lunches: candy, soda, sports energy drinks, junk food, cookies, and cake. Healthy lunch foods include: fruit, vegetables, bread, sandwiches, soups, noodles, rice, beans, milk, cheese, seaweed, yogurt, and water—home-made and wholesome foods.
Our lunch hours are split into K-2 and 3-5, so the K’s are never mixed with the upper grades on the yard. All children eat lunch in the cafeteria at a table with their class. They are also welcome to bring a snack outside during recesses.
RECESS
K’s have 3 recesses per day: a morning and an afternoon recess (which are K only) and a lunch recess with the 1st & 2nd graders.
In addition, we have 3 paid yard monitors, provided through a grant and PTA funds, as well as 2-3 parent volunteers on the yard during lunch recess every day. We also often have PE interns organizing games during recess.
