CURRICULUM
At Sunnyside, the children in each of our 17 classrooms receive instruction from experienced teachers with superb credentials. All of our faculty are credentialed teachers, and they actively pursue ongoing professional development in strands such as Environmental Education, Nutrition Education, and cutting-edge Reading Strategies. In addition, the teachers are ably assisted in the classrooms by student teachers, parents, and other volunteers.
Sunnyside’s curriculum is in accordance with the highest standards of the San Francisco Unified School District in Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education. In addition, we go beyond the basics to integrate hands-on learning via Art, Music, Movement, Poetry, Technology, and Gardening. Everyday learning includes a combination of individual work, small-group activities, and large-group discussions. Classroom lessons are also complemented by field trips that give children real-life experiences in science, the arts, and our community. We believe that learning should be multi-dimensional, tactile, and creative.
Sunnyside has private, state, and federal grants to provide additional and essential services for children who require special attention. Two of our 17 classrooms specifically serve severely impaired, special-needs children. Sunnyside also offers a Gifted and Talented Program (GATE), Multilingual Services, and Special Education Programs on site. Community grants and parent donations sponsor a Math Initiative, Reading Interventions, Garden Education, Arts Education, and Classroom Technology.
Expectations are high at Sunnyside. We believe all children can achieve their full potential.
