Kindergarten Classroom Rotation 9am-10am
Bring your child to the Sunnyside Elementary auditorium. Incoming kindergarteners will be split into 3 groups and rotated through the 3 classrooms for fun activities like storytime, creative play and drawing. This gives the K teaching team a chance to meet the students before assigning them to classrooms, and gives the incoming K’s a chance to meet the teachers and experience the classroom space before starting school on Monday. Parents will wait in the auditorium during the rotation.
Thursday, August 15th, 2013
Kindergarten Orientation 6pm-6:45pm
We will meet in the auditorium where you will find out your child’s classroom/teacher. Then, free childcare will be provided in the auditorium while parents attend a kindergarten orientation in their child’s classroom. The teacher will go over a typical day in the classroom, and discuss rules, expectations, materials, and answer questions. At the end of the evening, the children will get a chance to stop by their classroom and say hi to their teacher.

First day of school 8:40am-2:40pm
Please bring your child onto the schoolyard. The kindergarten classrooms line up on their room numbers, painted on the blacktop in the southwest corner of the school. The teachers will meet them on the yard and take them into the classrooms. There will be a Welcome Coffee in the library after drop-off.

Meet the Kindergarten Teachers
Kindergarten FAQ
What will my kindergartener need to bring to school each day?
Backpack, lunch or lunch money, and possibly an extra change of clothes or a jacket.
Do the kindergarteners have a separate lunch time or playground time?
Yes. K’s have 3 recesses per day, a morning and afternoon recess (which are K only) and a lunch recess with the 1st & 2nd graders. Our lunch hours are split into K-2 and 3-5, so the K’s are never mixed with the upper grades on the yard. All children eat lunch in the cafeteria at a table with their class. They are also welcome to bring a snack outside during recesses.
Where do I take my child on the first day of school?
We will all meet in the schoolyard and kids will line up behind their teachers. Kindergartners typically line up on the south side of the yard; room numbers are painted on the blacktop. Parents will be able to accompany their children to the door of their child's classroom on the first day, but will say goodbye to their kids in the schoolyard from that point on.
Where and what time do I drop off and pick up my child?
The schoolyard opens at 8:20 a.m. (families enrolled in the YMCA before-care program may enter prior to this time). Children assemble to go into their classrooms at 8:40 a.m. School ends at 2:40 p.m. and children may be picked up on the schoolyard at that time (after-care children will be taken to either the YMCA or to the ExCEL program).
What afterschool enrichment programs are offered for kindergarteners and when will they start?
Afterschool enrichment programs differ each semester and are available for sign-up during the first month of the school year. Currently, we offer art, Spanish, musical theater, sports, piano, Lego club, and sign language classes.
How can I meet other incoming kindergarteners and their families prior to the start of school?
The PTA organizes a few playdates for new families prior to each school year. Information will be available via the PTA and Kindergarten Yahoo listserves and on our homepage.
Are nut products allowed at Sunnyside?
Each class will determine whether or not to allow nut products based on the students' requirements.
When will we get to meet our child's teacher?
During our school tours, you will observe each of our Kindergarten classrooms and teachers. In August, prior to the first day of school, we hold a Kindergarten orientation during which parents and children will meet their teacher and visit their new classroom. We also hold a meet-and-greet in which children are able to meet all of the Kindergarten teachers.
