English Language Development (ELD) at Sunnyside
English Language Development (ELD) is a 30+ minute period in which students who are learning English as a second language gain structured practice in acquiring English. This allows practice allows them to work intensively on their English skills, outside of learning content-specific skills (like how to add multi-digit numbers or how erosion works). We regroup our students during ELD based upon upon their level of English acquisition. ELD instruction focuses on oral reproduction of English vocabulary and language structures so that they become more natural and fluid. ELD is a state-mandated period that should be occurring in one form or another in all California public schools. At Sunnyside, we envision ELD as part of the differentiated instruction that we provide to students based upon their needs and growth areas.
