Thank you Principal Schlenke for providing inspirational leadership to Sunnyside Elementary over the past five years. You have made a positive impact on the lives of the Sunnyside students, families, and teachers and we will carry on the academic exploration and achievement you developed during your tenure at Sunnyside. Enjoy your retirement!
Our annual SpringFest has finally arrived!
Join us Saturday, May 22, 11-3 for food, games, entertainment, and more. There will be a Raffle and first-ever Silent Auction, both with awesome prizes. Student artwork, plants and assorted gifts will also be for sale.
All SpringFest proceeds provide funding for PTA sponsored programs in Academics, Art, Health & Wellness, and Science and support various Community Events throughout the school year.
Hope to see you there!
SFUSD has requested to meet with Sunnyside parents tonight (Monday, May 10) at 5:30 pm. Our search for a new principal will be discussed. We need to have a good turn out so the district can address the concerns of the Sunnyside Community. Please come tonight and speak up for an excellent Principal for Sunnyside!
Childcare will be provided.
Got an hour or two to spare on Saturday? Come to Sunnyside to help spruce up the school, inside and out.
Cleanup day is this Saturday, April 24, from 10 am to 3 pm. Several projects around the school yard that are almost complete, and just a little more work is needed to finish the jobs. Projects include:
- The tile wall around the play structure has just a few more feet to go
- Install a new “Sunnyside School” sign above the Kindergarten entrance
- Install a bike rack
- Move some planters
- Pull weeds
- Shampoo classroom carpets
- Fix other odds and ends around the school
Contact Cathy Meyer at (415) 794-2203 or mulkeymeyer@att.net if you can help.
Please join us on Monday, April 19, at 5:30 pm, for an important PTA meeting. We will elect our 2010-2011 PTA Officers and hear a recap of the interview for Sunnyside’s new Principal. We will also continue planning for SpringFest, our biggest fundraising event of the year. Come to the PTA meeting to hear how you can help!
As always, pizza and childcare will be provided.
Due to the generous donations Sunnyside has received, the PTA will run a silent auction in conjunction with the gift sale. Items to be auctioned include: 2 round trip tickets on Jet Blue airlines, Navarette Tae Kwon Do certificates, Pacific Coast Family Photo Session and more to be announced as SpringFest approaches. Look for updates to the silent auction and gift sale donations posted on a SpringFest Information Board on the first floor starting next week, or check back here for complete SpringFest information.

The Art Committee at Sunnyside is reviving the literary journal with the aim at providing each child the opportunity to publish a written word or work of art in a collective magazine that will be created by the school and made available to each child and for sale to all families and friends. The journal will be released at the Spring Fest on May 22. In order to make that release date, the teachers, administration, parents, and, especially the students, must all rally around a shared vision and a set of achievable milestones.
All grades, K-5, will participate and we would like to recruit 4th and 5th grade volunteers to assist in the layout and production of the journal. In this first volume of “The Ray” we would like to utilize the title of the magazine and focus on the themes of growth. If you look up “ray” in the dictionary, you will find 16 definitions from a ray of sunshine (or other scientific applications) to a ray of hope. The theme of “growth”; therefore, can be interpreted in many scientific or personal ways. A ray of sunshine, as an example, fosters growth in plants, food, and nurtures the world. A student may want to focus on growth in a more personal nature. For example, how has he/she “grown” this year at Sunnyside?
The idea is to have fun with the theme and ultimately be proud of the final results!
