School starts Monday and Sunnyside is looking fantastic! The old building has new lighting, flooring, and other improvements. The elevator has been renovated. The play yard has new blacktop with wonderful games painted on -- hopscotch, four square, and many others. An ADA ramp and planters have been added between the upper and lower yards. By the end of September we should also have a new set of basketball courts and new gates on Hearst Ave. When everything is done, the construction trailers will go and the wall behind them will be painted.
Bungalows have been removed. Bungalow residents move to the second floor of the old building, which will be completed before school starts. Everyone begins the 2015-16 school year in their permanent classrooms!
The yard work is underway and will continue through September. The yard will be similar in size to what we have now and will include a basketball court and other fun elements. We expect everything to be complete by Oct. 1. The next phase involves a separate bond for greening. Read more about greening plans and timing here.
For an update on the planned February moves, please see the Principal's letter from February 4th.
We have great news! The contractor continues to work in the second floor of the existing building. They picked up some time with the early completion of the new building, and they are aiming to complete the second floor phase early as well.
Activities in the second floor include complete replacement of all finishes such as new flooring, paint, cabinets, and ceilings.
Stay tuned for news on the next steps.
We are very excited to report that the new building was completed about five weeks early. Classes moved over the weekend of November 21st and after a day of orientation and fun on the first day, the classes have all settled into their new locations.
The next phase consists of renovating the entire second floor of the existing building and this work is already well underway. There is no access to the second floor and the door to the old building from Flood Street is not in use. For now and through the next few weeks, all the contractor will be doing is interior demolition of the 2nd floor walls and ceilings.
These construction activities will not change between now and the time the kids leave for break on 12/19. So, unless there’s anything pressing or new to communicate, there will be no updates until next year.
Please note that the new gate from Flood Street should not be used for pedestrian access.
The construction crew is putting the finishing touches on the new building and barring any unforeseen circumstances, classes are scheduled to move following the end of the school day on Friday, November 21st. The first day of classes in the new facility will occur on Monday, November 24th. First and second grade classroom will be moving into the new building along with the library and temporary cubicles for some office functions. This will allow all classes and functions on the 2nd floor of the old building to be moved into the vacated bungalows at the same time so that renovation work can begin on the 2nd floor of the old building. As of November 24th, here is where classrooms and other functions will be located:
There's not much new to report as the crew just keeps working toward the projected on-time completion. It's really coming along!
For the next four months the only planned work is related to the new building. Apart from some small miscellaneous items that needed attention, work on the existing building is completed for now.
Work on the new building includes:
You may have noticed a lot of new features at Sunnyside this week. Thanks to the work of the Sunnyside parents, the staff, and the construction team, we had a very smooth and positive start of school. Successfully completed work over the summer included:
In the next few months and through December, work will continue in the new building. Currently, new metal stairs, windows, and siding are being installed. Cabinetry and finishes inside the classroom spaces will follow.
