<![CDATA[Next Phase]]>Fri, 05 Dec 2014 17:30:35 GMThttp://www.sunnysidek5.org/renovation-blog/next-phaseWe are very excited to report that the new building was completed about five weeks early. Classes moved over the weekend of November 21st and after a day of orientation and fun on the first day, the classes have all settled into their new locations.

The next phase consists of renovating the entire second floor of the existing building and this work is already well underway. There is no access to the second floor and the door to the old building from Flood Street is not in use. For now and through the next few weeks, all the contractor will be doing is interior demolition of the 2nd floor walls and ceilings.

These construction activities will not change between now and the time the kids leave for break on 12/19. So, unless there’s anything pressing or new to communicate, there will be no updates until next year.

Please note that the new gate from Flood Street should not be used for pedestrian access.]]>

First and second grade classroom will be moving into the new building along with the library and temporary cubicles for some office functions. This will allow all classes and functions on the 2nd floor of the old building to be moved into the vacated bungalows at the same time so that renovation work can begin on the 2nd floor of the old building. As of November 24th, here is where classrooms and other functions will be located:

Thanks to the work of the Sunnyside parents, the staff, and the construction team, we had a very smooth and positive start of school. Successfully completed work over the summer included:
 • Finished three sets of multiple-stall bathrooms and one staff bathroom
 • Renovated two single-stall bathrooms in the auditorium/cafeteria
 • Completed the kitchen with transaction counter and roll-up door
 • Painted, installed a drinking fountain, and refinished the floors in the auditorium/cafeteria
 • Created four new office spaces as well as flex space for after school programs
 • New server room
 • Relocation of teachers due to non-construction related activities

In the next few months and through December, work will continue in the new building. Currently, new metal stairs, windows, and siding are being installed. Cabinetry and finishes inside the classroom spaces will follow.

<![CDATA[Back to School]]>Mon, 18 Aug 2014 18:55:47 GMThttp://www.sunnysidek5.org/renovation-blog/back-to-schoolThe crew worked hard to get ready for the first day of school. There are still some projects to be completed over the next several weeks but all the work has been inspected to ensure that the school site is safe and secure for the students and staff. The new building is on track for completion at the end of the year.

It was a grey morning but there was a lot of excitement on the school yard this morning! In addition to the interior work on the auditorium, the restrooms, and other spaces, there's a brand new stairway up to the building that should relieve the congestion that often was an issue there.
